Critic's Choice?

The art community has spent a lot of time and money trying to tell people what is good and bad art, and
occasionally they know what they are talking about.  However, too often art critic’s curators, and other art
movers and shakers are people who love art, but especially love   only there kind of art!!  They are
frequently unkind to art that they do not appreciate or cannot linearly link from art movement A to
Art movement B.  However the real world does not really work in linear lines - influences fan out, become
diverse, coalesce and reformulate into both new and old.

There has been some bias towards the realist painter over the last 50 years or so, particularly in the last
20 years.  Even though I dabble in abstract works, (and I do enjoy creating “abstracts”).   I used to submit to
shows, and competitions and I remember one particular show I was in, was entirely biased towards the
abstract theme.  None of the “traditional” works by respected artists where picked even for an “honorable
mention.” This type of attitude by art critics (not all thank goodness) can make some artists wonder what is
happening with the art community, and how they can overcome this bias.

I recall several years ago, an old building in New York that was slated for demolition.  The reason this
building came to prominence was that they discovered some old bathroom fixtures (urinals) that where
unusual in design.  They where cleaned up and put on display in a gallery.  An art critic put in a glowing
commentary about the artistic creative ability of the company that made them.  People flocked to the exhibit
and ended up paying several thousand dollars for them and putting them in their entrance hallways as an
“art curios.”  Truly…art is in the eye of the beholder... I guess.  Would you call this abstract art?
I am not going to get into a kicking contest about who is right or wrong, but I am going to include some links
that I found interesting.  Some of the links are controversial and you can find all kinds of other links and references
on the web from artist’s famous and not so famous. If you want to check out some opinions go to:

One Artists Quote:
"Artists are supposedly rebels. It's supposed to be about pushing boundaries. So why would they expect
success in a system that basically has nothing to do with them”?
